Following the discovery of a drone carrying explosive materials in the runway area of Leipzig/Halle airport in eastern Germany, officials of this country announced that, late on Thursday as well, two drones were spotted over a military base in western Germany.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for the German armed forces said that the drones were observed at around 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday at the M[e]chernich military base in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, about 35 kilometers from the border with Belgium.

According to German media reports, the Mechernich military base has an underground facility with high-security measures for storing military equipment and spare parts. Maintenance and repair personnel for the U.S. Patriot air defense systems are also stationed at this base.

So far, German authorities have not officially identified any country as responsible for the aforementioned drone threats, but some members of parliament have pointed the finger at Russia.

On Friday, the Wall Street Journal also reported, citing U.S. officials, that the drone carrying explosive materials that was found at a German airport is likely owned by the Russian government.
