🔸German security officials are investigating a hidden weapons cache in a forest near Berlin which, according to reports from media in the country, may have been intended to carry out targeted assassinations on behalf of Russian intelligence organizations.
🔸The newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and the public networks NDR and WDR reported on Friday that a suspect in Romania had been detained in connection with the case.
🔸According to a report by the German news agency, the hideout discovered near Berlin included two handguns and a significant quantity of ammunition, and there was evidence indicating that the weapons had been placed at the location by Russian intelligence agencies.
🔸Alexander Deubrinnt, Germany’s interior minister, said the suspect is being investigated for spying and for planning to carry out a violent attack that would jeopardize the country’s security, adding: “This case shows that we are facing a high level of threat.”
🔸The case comes as German officials in recent months have repeatedly warned about an increase in espionage operations, sabotage, cyberattacks, and other forms of “hybrid warfare.”
