Houthi groups backed by Iran warned that any military intervention by the United States in Yemen—both to support Saudi Arabia and to regain control of the Bab al-Mandab—would be met with a direct response from this group.

Abd al-Muhammad al-Thawr, a military adviser to the Houthis, told Agence France-Presse that if the United States "with its fleet" enters the conflict or attempts to take control of Bab al-Mandab, the Houthis will confront it.

He said: «If the United States dares to carry out a military intervention or wants to take control of Bab al-Mandab, this is a red line for them and for any other party. We will fight over it.»

Bab al-Mandab is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world and the route to the Red Sea.

In recent weeks, the Houthis have taken control of this waterway; a move that has increased concerns about energy security and global trade.

This Houthi official said that if the United States supports Saudi Arabia with airstrikes or airborne support, the Houthis will "identify any U.S. interests" around them as targets.
