🔸 Increase in the number of deaths from the earthquake in Colombia

According to the United Nations, the number of victims of the earthquake in Colombia has increased to at least 224. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced on Wednesday, 12 August (21 Mordad) that at least around 2,600 people have also been injured.

The Colombia earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, occurred on Monday, and so far 29 aftershocks have been recorded. The earthquake has left widespread destruction in many areas of the country, and the damage to critical infrastructure such as the power grid, drinking water, medical services, and telecommunications has posed difficult challenges for emergency response forces.

The epicenter of the earthquake—which is the most severe in decades in Colombia—was located near the city of San José del Palmar, in the west of the country.

The UN expects that the actual number of deaths and injuries may be higher than current figures. The organization, citing widespread lack of information, warned that this situation has made search and rescue operations, as well as providing shelter and medical services for the affected, more difficult.
