🔻 Iran Welcomes China and Russia’s Veto in the UN Security Council As we reported live earlier in this coverage, at the Thursday meeting of the United Nations Security Council, the renewal of the mandate of the panel of experts monitoring Iran sanctions was unsuccessful due to Russia and China’s veto.

The Russian delegation to the council said: «The UN Security Council has concluded its consideration of Iran’s nuclear issue, and the issue of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons has been removed from the matters under the council’s consideration.»

The delegation emphasized that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 expired on October 18, 2025, and therefore there is no legal basis for convening this meeting.

The draft resolution, submitted by the United States, sought to extend the work of the “panel of experts,” which helped the Iran sanctions committee (known as the 1737 Committee) before the end of its mandate on September 26.

The draft resolution obtained 11 votes in favor and two abstentions, but was rejected due to the negative votes of Russia and China, two permanent members of the UN Security Council.

An hour later, the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations expressed appreciation for the action by China and Russia and said: «Iran expresses its deep gratitude to Russia and China for their principled and steadfast positions and decisive actions today. We also thank Somalia and Pakistan for their valuable positions and their abstention.»

Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran and the country’s senior negotiator in the course of the Islamabad understandings, also said in a statement published by it: «The end has come of a unipolar order in which one side was extracting concessions by force and coercion. China and Russia’s veto rejected the political misuse of the Security Council and restored the rule of law. We must defend multilateralism, because unilateralism serves the interests of no one.»
