Israel and the United States on Thursday successfully tested a new version of the “Arrow” missile defense system to counter long-range ballistic missiles.

The test was carried out by Israel’s Missile Defense Organization and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, and is part of a long-term program to evaluate and upgrade the “Arrow” system.

No further details about the test have been released yet, but officials from both countries said the test will help the process of updating the interceptor missile of this air-defense system.

The “Arrow” system is Israel’s main defensive layer against long-range ballistic missiles and the highest level of the country’s multi-layer missile defense network, which has also played an important role in countering attacks during the past three years by the Islamic Republic of Iran and Yemen’s Houthis against Israel.

Over the years, Israel and the United States have jointly developed the system, and Washington has played a role in financing and supporting the modernization process.
