🔻Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, has reported on her meeting with Abbas Iraqchi, Iran’s foreign minister, in New York, and also shared a photo from the meeting.

In the meeting, Ms. Kallas discussed issues including freedom of passage for ships through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb, as well as the increase in executions in Iran.

In a post on her account on the social media platform X, the EU foreign policy chief wrote: “On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, I met with Iraqchi, Iran’s foreign minister. We discussed diplomatic prospects for ending the war between the United States and Iran and for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.”

Ms. Kallas continued: “Before the war, there were no charges or costs for passage (through the Strait of Hormuz), and after the war there should not be such costs either. Shipping, whether through the Strait of Hormuz or the Bab el-Mandeb, must be free and unhindered.”

She added: “I also raised the issue of domestic repression in Iran, including the sharp increase in executions and the issuing of death sentences.”
