Five years after the return of the Taliban government to power, the women who once served as judges and lawyers in Afghanistan’s judicial system are no longer sitting behind court desks. But in their homes, women still go to them for advice and to seek justice; women who say that their access to justice has become more difficult.

Mezgan—an alias for a 35-year-old woman—is one of them.

She says that, to escape a marriage that was against her will, she went to court, but in the end she was sent back to live with her husband.
