🔶 Media reports on Germany preparing a punitive package against Russia

German media say the country’s government is preparing a package of sanctions and punitive measures against Russia following a drone incident in early August at Leipzig Airport.

The newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” and the website “Politico” reported that the German government intends, in the coming days, to formally designate Moscow as responsible for the attempt to attack Leipzig Airport using a drone carrying explosive materials.

According to these reports, the official announcement of this position is likely to be made at the beginning of next week.

A spokesperson for the German government has neither confirmed nor denied this information.

German media have written that, at the same time as identifying Russia as the party behind the incident, a broad package of sanctions against Moscow will be announced. The package will include a combination of direct measures by Germany and new sanctions from the European Union.

Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, had said last Thursday that the federal government would soon introduce the officials responsible for the incident.

Alexander Deuborint, Germany’s interior minister, has so far only spoken of the role of “foreign powers” and has not mentioned Russia.
