🔻 Mohammad Khatami defends understanding memorandum with the United States: don’t let the opportunity be lost

Mohammad Khatami, the former president of Iran, defended an understanding memorandum between Iran and the United States and said, “After the war, an exceptional opportunity arose for the country and the people, the signs of which we see in the Geneva memorandum.”

Mr. Khatami also praised the decision of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and its military commanders to obtain the understanding memorandum, and at the same time said, “We should recognize the courage and sacrifice of the honorable president.”

He said that although the United States is not “trustworthy,” these issues should be dealt with using “prudence and diplomacy.” The reformist former head of government said, “I hope that this time the opportunity provided will not be lost; as unfortunately has happened many times—if it goes, the threats will become more severe.”

He said, “In any understanding, both concessions are given and concessions are taken.”

In recent weeks, conservative currents in Iran had criticized President Masoud Pezeshkian’s government for its stances and insistence on negotiations.

Mohammad Khatami also said that “dignified peace” should be achieved and added that the “space for life” must be opened “to the people who are under severe hardship, especially in terms of livelihoods and despair about a better future.”

He called for resolving the people’s economic problems and warned that “in these years, the lifeblood that has been used to create a distance between the people and the government is very pronounced.”
