Reuters, citing several Pakistani officials, said that Asim Munir, the commander of the Pakistan Army, spoke by phone with Donald Trump last week, before traveling to Tehran.

Three Pakistani sources, in a conversation with Reuters, emphasized that the call was made a few days before Munir was expected to travel to Tehran on Monday to hold talks with officials of the Islamic Republic.

According to Reuters, this call, which had not been reported earlier, took place at a time when the United States announced that it would impose extensive economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic and its business partners.

The report also said that the Pakistan Army commander is expected to meet on Monday with people close to Mojtaba Khamenei.

Reuters wrote that tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic were listed as one of the expected focus areas of this trip.

Another source in the Pakistani government also said: “Munir is also expected to discuss the recent attacks by the Houthi forces affiliated with the Islamic Republic on Saudi Arabia, Pakistan’s ally.”
