The collapse of an illegal gold mine in the Central African Republic killed more than 100 people and injured several others.
The traditional gold mine, located in the village of Zamboye in the Nana-Mambéré Province near the Cameroon border, collapsed on Tuesday, 27 Mordad (18 August) in the morning.
The prosecutor at the Baboa district court said that investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the incident, identify the victims and the individuals responsible for operating the mine, and also to examine any possible criminal liability.
In the Central African Republic, thousands of people work in small mines extracting gold and other minerals, and the collapse of these traditional mines is very common. Miners usually do not have adequate safety equipment and facilities. Fatal accidents in these mines have happened repeatedly.
