The New York Post reported that Ramaa Dowaji, the Syrian-American wife of Zehraan Mamdani, the mayor of New York, is expected to travel to Syria and Lebanon starting in late September to visit her family, while the U.S. State Department has issued a “do not travel” warning for trips to these two countries.

The office of the New York mayor initially said that, following police advice, Dowaji’s security team will accompany her on the trip. However, New York police later denied the claim and said officers from this force are not assigned for personal trips to countries with a Level Four travel advisory.

A source familiar with the matter also told the New York Post that the trip has no connection to the city mayor’s official duties.

Dowaji, a 29-year-old Syrian-American artist, describes herself as a “Syrian illustrator,” and her father and mother are originally from Damascus. She has previously traveled to Lebanon and, in 2019, attended an art residency in Beirut.
