The United States and Denmark have reported reaching an agreement on Greenland security. The agreement ends a diplomatic dispute sparked by threats from Donald Trump, the U.S. president, to seize this territory by force.

Mr. Trump said that the deal will provide the United States with "permanent control over security matters and all other needs."

Denmark’s prime minister also said the agreement "strengthens security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic region," but did not go into specific details that Donald Trump had referred to in his post on social media.

The agreement came after dozens of months of threats from Mr. Trump to "take" Greenland for national security reasons—threats that emphasized the territory’s strategic position for defense objectives as well as its mineral resources.

In a post on the Truth Social social network, Mr. Trump wrote that this agreement "has no cost for the United States" and will allow the country to take "any action necessary" to "provide and maintain security in Greenland."
