The Washington Post, citing six U.S. officials familiar with the Pentagon’s internal war data

The Washington Post, citing six American officials familiar with the internal statistics of the U.S. Department of Defense, reported that at least 22 American military personnel have been killed during the Iran war; this figure is four more than the number published on the U.S. Department of Defense’s public website.

The newspaper wrote on Friday, 27 Shahrivar, that five of these officials said the number of killed service members is at least 22, but the sixth official assessed the figure as 23. At present, the number of service members killed since the start of the Iran war recorded in the Pentagon’s public casualty database is 18.

One of these officials said that all unrecorded cases are not necessarily directly related to the war, but these service members were present during clashes in the Middle East.

The U.S. Department of Defense did not respond to the Washington Post’s questions about the discrepancy between the internal figures and those publicly released. According to the Pentagon’s public statement, since the start of the war more than 820 American military personnel have also been wounded in operations.

The Washington Post also, based on a document, reported that U.S. Central Command, CENTCOM, estimated the cost of the Iran war through early September at about 43.6 billion dollars.
