Tom Barrack, the U.S. ambassador in Turkey and the President’s special envoy for Iraq and Syria, called the removal of Syria’s name from the list of state sponsors of terrorism a “historic step” in line with the policy of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, to provide the country with a fresh opportunity.

In a post on X, Barrack wrote that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had officially removed Syria from the list, and that the move is a decisive step on Syria’s path “from isolation to partnership.”

He added that Syria’s presence on the list for a long time was an obstacle to investment, entrepreneurship, and the necessary opportunities for rebuilding the country, and that now “another wall has fallen.”

Barrack said the move is another cornerstone in the formation of new U.S.-Syria relations based on shared interests, mutual security, and shared prosperity.

He wrote: “Promises were made; promises were fulfilled. Syria has been given an opportunity; now the task is to turn this opportunity into lasting peace and prosperity.”
