🔶 UN commissioner expresses concern about consequences of US-Iran clashes and intensification of crackdowns

Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Monday, September 7 (16 Shahrivar), on the first day of the sixty-third session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, expressed concern over an attack on a wedding ceremony in Sirik, Hormozgan province.

In the opening part of his remarks, he said he was concerned about the consequences of the resumption of military hostilities between the United States and Iran, and described as alarming the increase in civilian death tolls that has affected the entire region, specifically referring to the attacks carried out on this ceremony in Sirik.

He went on to stress, with emphasis on people’s right to peaceful protest, freedom of expression, and access to information, saying: “These rights create trust between people and their governments. They are bridges between frustration and dialogue; and between demands and change. However, many governments, instead of engaging with the legitimate concerns of their people, resort to repression.”
