Veiling in Iran; from tolerance at government rallies to clashes in cafés

🔸In recent days, a new wave of sealing of cafés and other businesses over alleged failure to observe “mandatory hijab” has reached different parts of Iran. The publication of images of officers and warnings to women in Gilan, alongside renewed pressure from some political figures to deal with unveiled women, indicates that the issue of hijab has returned to the streets and public spaces.

🔸According to the website “Rooydad 24,” this new wave of closures and shutdowns of businesses over hijab, along with the release of images of the morality police’s patrols in Gilan province, appear to be pieces of a coordinated policy. A policy that, at least for a time after the implementation of the Hijab and Chastity law was halted by the Supreme National Security Council, had been left in abeyance.

🔸The new treatment has highlighted a contradiction: the difference in the government’s conduct toward women without hijab during the 40-day war and the weeks that followed.
