Iranian government officials have publicly said that the agreement reached with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz will create new shipping routes, under which commercial ships can enter the Persian Gulf via a route under Iranian control and exit via an outbound route under Omani control.

A U.S. official familiar with the negotiations, in an interview with ABC News, confirmed that discussions about this temporary route took place during talks between Iran and Oman. He also said that the plan would be limited to a 60-day period, during which negotiators will seek to reach a long-term agreement to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and, at the same time, continue negotiations over a nuclear agreement.

These arrangements appear to formally entrench the Islamic Republic’s control over the waterway. The U.S. official also warned that nothing is final until it is announced publicly.
