🔶 European participation in choosing new designs for euro banknotes
Euro area citizens in Europe can vote online on a total of ten proposed designs for future euro banknotes. The designs sometimes resemble watercolor paintings with a few brushstrokes, sometimes realistic like images from a biology textbook, and sometimes abstract with geometric shapes. This poll will run until next Monday, September 21, 2026.
According to the European Central Bank, so far about 9 million people have taken part in the survey. Niels Gerhardt, a banknote expert at the ECB, says: “Given the roughly 359 million people living in the euro area, this figure seems small at first glance.” However, according to him, this level of participation is considered a great success compared with similar surveys.
When the survey was launched in July, Christine Lagarde, the ECB president, said that all the proposed designs are in essence based on two broad main themes. One is nature, meaning birds and rivers, and the other is European culture, represented by European figures.
