🔶 Parliamentary elections in the states of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern begin

Parliamentary elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern began on Sunday, September 20 (29 Khordad), at 8:00 a.m. It is expected that the contest in both states will be very close. According to opinion polls in Berlin, the Left Party and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) are leading, and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Alternative for Germany (AfD) are leading.

In the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in eastern Germany, about 1.3 million people are eligible to vote, and for the first time, 16- and 17-year-olds can also vote. The state is currently governed by a coalition of the Social Democratic Party and the Left Party.

Polling stations are open from 8:00 to 18:00.

Both state elections are also being followed closely outside Germany, and particularly the performance of the Alternative for Germany party is in the spotlight.

The polls point to a contest between the Social Democratic Party led by Manuela Schwesig, head of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state government, and Alternative for Germany. The state is currently administered by a coalition of the Social Democratic Party and the Left Party.
