🔶 Merz meets with officials from the Christian Democratic Party after the state election results

Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, is set to hold consultations with officials of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) about the results of the state elections. The election results in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin also matter at the level of federal policy in Germany.

Discussions about Friedrich Merz’s future as party leader and Chancellor of Germany depend on the outcome the Christian Democratic Union achieves, and will likely intensify again.

Unlike the previous state election in Saxony-Anhalt, this time Merz has invited all members of the party’s executive board to Berlin for the early hours of Sunday, 20 September (29 Shahrivar) to consult on the election results.

The German chancellor has been under heavy pressure since the Christian Democratic Party’s defeat in the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, located in eastern Germany, in early September. In this parliamentary election, the CDU’s vote share was cut in half compared with the previous election, while the far-right and right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) narrowly missed an absolute majority.
