The human rights website Hengaw reported that the Tabriz Civil Registration Office has opposed naming a baby boy “Berkay” and, despite more than seven months passing since his birth, has still not issued him a birth certificate.

According to this report, the Civil Registration Office stated that the name “Berkay” is not registered in the system of this office and, for that reason, has refused to issue a birth certificate for this child, who was born on 6 Bahman 1404.

The child’s father, with the help of a lawyer, filed a complaint against the Civil Registration Office, but the Sixth Branch of the Tabriz Peace Court rejected his complaint in Ordibehesht 1405. The mother’s separate complaint was also rejected in the Twenty-Fourth Branch of the Tabriz Peace Court. That branch, in Mordad, rejected the father’s renewed request as well, citing the earlier ruling.

During the follow-up on the case, the child’s family submitted to the court a copy of someone else’s birth certificate who had previously been issued with the name “Berkay” in Zanjan province. However, the officials of the Civil Registration Office said that the ruling in that case applied only to that particular individual.
