Italy announced it will extend its open-border arrangements with Spain for another 15 days. This extension continues the restrictions that Rome imposed one month ago, before and after the widespread influx of migrants into the Spanish town of Sebta.

More than 60,000 people entered the Spanish town of Sebta from Morocco on 8 Mordad. According to reports, at least 72 people died during that crossing.

Spanish authorities later said that more than 48,000 people voluntarily returned to Morocco.

On the evening of 8 Mordad, Italy’s Ministry of the Interior announced the temporary suspension of the Schengen freedom of movement regime and put in place “targeted and selective” inspections of non-European travelers.
