🔻Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, in his speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, criticized the continued military operations by Israel in Gaza and said that Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, is still carrying on “genocide” in the region.

On Wednesday, Sánchez said Spain has imposed sanctions in response to the situation in Gaza so far and intends to take further measures against Israel.

In recent months, Spain’s prime minister has also been among the critics of the policies of Israel’s government in the war in Gaza. Spain’s government had previously announced a set of measures, including restrictions related to arms exports and military cooperation with Israel.

Sánchez also discussed the crises in Gaza and the Middle East in a meeting on Wednesday, September 22, with António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The office of Spain’s prime minister announced that both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation in circumstances where clashes, including the war in Gaza, continue.

Sánchez’s remarks came as Guterres, too, at the beginning of the General Assembly’s general debate, expressed concern about the situation in Gaza and called for a halt to hostilities, an increase in humanitarian aid, and adherence to international law. Guterres said that the scale of killing and destruction in Gaza, including some of the most severe cases he has witnessed during his tenure as UN Secretary-General, is among them.
