🔶 The United States expands the scope of secondary sanctions against Iran

The U.S. Treasury Department is expected to expand the range of secondary sanctions it can impose on entities and countries that have commercial ties with Iran.

A person familiar with the plan told Reuters that the Trump administration is seeking to increase economic pressure on Tehran.

According to the source, who did not want to be named because they lacked permission to speak publicly about the matter, the goal of the move is to “deliver a final warning” to countries to cut their commercial ties with Iran; an action intended to end an almost six-month standoff that has disrupted the Strait of Hormuz and energy exports from the Persian Gulf region.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce further details of the new actions against Iran on Monday, August 24 (September 2), at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (17:00 GMT) at a news conference.
