When Xi Jinping, president of China, arrives in Washington on Wednesday, it will be his first official trip to the United States in 11 years.

But his first encounter with America happened long before he became the most powerful leader in China in several generations.

Four decades ago, Xi was a county-level official in northern China who went on a research trip to the U.S. Midwest region of the western part of the country.
