🔶 Lavrov called NATO activity in the Arctic a “direct threat” to Russia

Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said in an article published on Monday, August 31 (September 9), that Russia considers NATO’s activities in the Arctic a “direct threat” to its security; this comes as members of the alliance have increased their presence in the region in the wake of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

In February, NATO launched a mission titled “Arctic Sentry” to strengthen its presence in remote northern areas; a move that indicates the alliance’s growing attention to the Arctic amid tensions with Russia and amid Donald Trump, the U.S. president, seeking to take control of Greenland.

Russia, which has a naval fleet in the Arctic including nuclear-armed submarines, considers the region an area of its interests and is also developing a shipping route there to connect with Asian countries.
