🔶 Passenger ship accident off the northern Cyprus coast leaves several dead

News agencies, following the incident, have reported at least seven people killed after a passenger vessel in the waters off the island of Cyprus.

In a statement to the “CNN Türk” network, Ersin Tatar, the president of the Turkish Cypriot community in North Cyprus (the north of Cyprus), said that so far 237 passengers have been rescued and that the search for another 23 people is ongoing.

According to the German news agency, officials from the Turkish Cypriot administration said the ship capsized briefly on Sunday, August 30, in the afternoon, shortly after departing from the port city of Girne (Kyrenia).

According to reports, water entered the ship and an emergency message requesting help had been sent. The vessel was traveling en route to Mersin in southern Turkey.

CNN Türk has published images of a helicopter flying over the people affected by the accident. In the footage, people wearing life jackets can be seen clinging to the partially submerged hull of the ship, waiting to be taken to a safe area.
