An American Air Force bomberImage source, Reuters CBS, a news network that is a working partner of the BBC in the United States, has reported that the families of U.S. soldiers in the 82nd Airborne Division who were deployed to the Middle East earlier this year have been informed by the command of the division that their mission may continue until 2027.

According to CBS News, the matter was announced in a letter that the division’s commanders sent to the families, and two U.S. officials have also confirmed its contents.

In the letter, dated Sunday — the eighth of Shahrivar — the commanders of the 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina said that the deployed forces’ tour could, in total, reach 12 months.

In the letter, General J. General Brandon Tagueymyer, the division commander, and James Bradshaw, the division’s senior non-commissioned officer commander, wrote: “We are not bringing this up lightly and we know that extending the mission puts a significant burden on every family—including our own families.”

The report comes as fighting between the United States and Iran has intensified again, and Washington in recent days has put additional forces in the region on standby.

CBS has reported that the continued presence of 82nd Airborne Division forces until 2027 could be a sign of the U.S. Army’s readiness for a longer-term presence in the Middle East.
