New Zealand announced a new package of sanctions against individuals and entities backing Russia’s war in Ukraine. The move was carried out hours after the approval of a sweeping Russia sanctions bill in the U.S. Senate.

On Saturday, Winston Peters, New Zealand’s foreign minister, said in a statement that the package targets 33 individuals and entities. Its special focus is on cyber actors and those involved in the forced transfer, abduction, and re-education of Ukrainian children.

Peters said: “Children must never be tools of war.” He added that New Zealand is deeply concerned about efforts to abduct and re-educate Ukrainian children through government-run compulsory programs.

The U.S. Senate approved the sweeping Russia sanctions bill the night before. The bill, named the “Russia and Iran Lindsey Graham Sanctions Act,” allows the U.S. president to impose up to 100% tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas. China and India are the largest buyers of Russia’s crude oil.
